Year 1 - St Francis of Assisi

Welcome to our Year 1 Class Page!

This is an exciting and important stage in your child’s learning journey, where they build on early experiences and develop greater independence, confidence and curiosity. Throughout the year, children will strengthen their core skills in reading, writing and maths while exploring a broad and engaging curriculum.

A key focus is phonics, helping children become fluent and confident readers. In English, they begin to form simple sentences using their phonics knowledge and basic punctuation. In maths, pupils develop their understanding of number, place value, addition and subtraction, as well as shape, measure and problem- solving.

We also place  a great emphasis on key learning skills. Children are encouraged to be independent, have a go, listen carefully and work with others. We support them to build confidence, stay focused and feel proud of their learning. During the year, children will take part in two exciting trips:  one exploring changes in toys throughout history and another to the zoo.
